Big changes at the NYT station in Huntsville, WHNT. Earlier this week corporate came to town and got rid of the general manager and news director. I don’t know if “fired” is the correct word here so I’ll just say those two won’t be coming back to work there.
It’s been no secret that things haven’t been rosey at 19 in recent months. Ratings have dipped and the station has been trailing 48 (Raycom’s NBC affiliate) by larger numbers every book. Recent editorial decisions have been questioned (and with good reason) by the local newspaper. From what some have told me, management has seemed desperate to improve the ratings, often at the expense of good journalism.
Word is the change in leadership has been a spark for employees. But with such a drastic change just a few weeks before the most-important November book one wonders what effect it might have on next month’s numbers.
