Changes at the top

Big changes at the NYT station in Huntsville, WHNT. Earlier this week corporate came to town and got rid of the general manager and news director. I don’t know if “fired” is the correct word here so I’ll just say those two won’t be coming back to work there.

It’s been no secret that things haven’t been rosey at 19 in recent months. Ratings have dipped and the station has been trailing 48 (Raycom’s NBC affiliate) by larger numbers every book. Recent editorial decisions have been questioned (and with good reason) by the local newspaper. From what some have told me, management has seemed desperate to improve the ratings, often at the expense of good journalism.

Word is the change in leadership has been a spark for employees. But with such a drastic change just a few weeks before the most-important November book one wonders what effect it might have on next month’s numbers.

“. . . management has seemed desperate to improve the ratings, often at the expense of good journalism.”

Hmmm, sorta sound like another New York Times TV station.

You know how on a bottle of antibiotics it says continue to take, even if you feel better. Reason being all of the nasty bacteria might not be dead. Well the changes at 19 were a start, but I’m afraid they’ve stopped taking their medicine before all the bacteria are dead.

I take issue with some of what you write – but then again you’re getting info second hand. I look forward to chatting about it over a beer someday!
