Deep Throat

Wow. The best kept secret, perhaps of all time, has been revealed. Deep Throat is W. Mark Felt.

W. Mark Felt. His identity is just as big a mystery today as it was yesterday. Who the heck is W. Mark Felt???

He’s the man who ruined afternoon television in the summer of 1973. For kids at least. For those intrigued by espionage and cloaks and daggers and missing audio tapes, he brought real drama.

What’s funny is that the newspaper where the reporters who broke the Watergate story worked, got scooped by Vanity Fair! The only people in the world who knew who Deep Throat was missed the payoff. They didn’t see it on television news, they didn’t read about it in another newspaper, they saw it online. Vanity Fair posted the news on it’s website in advance of the article coming out next week.

Great essay from Washington Post writer Hank Stuever.

“Had he lived in this era, Deep Throat might not have lasted long. He’d be blogged to bits. He’d be Drudged, smudged, Romenesko’d. People would disprove him with their own Deep Throats. His identity would be discovered within a news cycle or two, spun around, and he’d be left holding a book contract.”
