Is Reality TV getting old?

Tuesday nights are reality tv night in our house. First, it’s “American Idol”, followed by “Amazing Race” and then “Nashville Star” on USA Network. Then, I watch “Big Break” on the Golf Channel which I record while the other shows are on.

4 hours of reality tv in one night. I’m not proud of that. I’m a little embarrassed to tell you the truth. I watch it all because I enjoy it. I think.

The truth is, tonight I didn’t enjoy it all that much. I don’t particularly like how FOX draws out American Idol to 3 nights and how we have to sit through 27 minutes of commercials and promos to find out who’s been booted.

The folks at USA have nearly destroyed “Nashville Star”. In case you’ve never seen it, think “Hillbilly Idol”. I loved the show the previous two seasons because the contestants were far more talented than the ones on Idol. They play instruments, they write their own songs and most of the time they sing in pitch. This season the talent doesn’t seem to be as good and they’ve replaced the host and the judges with a bunch of people from the school of “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
They’re just too darn nice. “Oh…that was great, you’re soooooo talented” “You have a great voice…and you’re so pretty”.

The producers brought in Brett Michaels to be a judge. Brett Michaels??? The lead singer of Poison? The guy who’s best known for the famous Pamela Anderson video? Judging a country music show? What are the producers thinking? His best line tonight was “nobody sucks this year”.

And tonight, the girl who nearly threw up on stage during last week’s debut made it through to the second round.

Nashville Star has jumped the shark. How much longer will the other reality shows hang on? Aging sitcom writers in Hollywood are dying to know.
