Vote For the Worst

without comments

I suspected there was an effort to push the worst singer on American Idol to the finals. Last year Kevin Covaise went further than some of the better singers. This year: it’s Sanjia.

There’s a website www.votefortheworst.com which picks the worst singer on the reality show and encourages people to vote for them. So far it’s worked with Sangia who has been horrible compared to the others.

If you notice, the past few weeks he looks almost pitiful when a much better singer gets the boot while he stays. I think I even saw him tell one contestant “I’m sorry”.

I’ll never cast a vote for American Idol but I sincerely hope he wins. Wouldn’t that be fun?!

And That’s Why They Call it a Rumpus Room

with 2 comments

I’ve found that it can be pretty cool living in someone else’s former home.

The house we’re in now is our first non-new home. The previous owners built it, raised their two kids and then retired to a smaller home somewhere near water I imagine. As the second or third owner of a home you inherit certain things from the ghosts of owners past.

Unlike our previous homes, our yard here is well established along with garden beds packed with perennials. Of course we also inherited a previously used dishwasher, furnace, carpet and roof. Light fixtures that were really cool when Reagan was President. I don’t think you can call it retro if it’s never been changed.

We also have what I’ve always wanted, a full finished basement. That’s where the kids spend most of their playtime and where my office is located. It’s partially carpeted and divided into rooms or sections. It has one of those drop-ceilings, suspended ceilings, that’s the name. White speckled on one side, fiberglass insulation on the other.

Tonight while re-installing blinds in the only small window in the basement, I had to push up on a section of the ceiling to push another section into its place.

When I pushed up something fell out.
Apparently at some time in its history my new office saw some action because the box only had one left inside.

I have no idea who it belonged to. Maybe a guest who hid the box while staying downstairs. Maybe Mr. Previous owner? But you might also assume it was jr. And I wonder if at some point he ever remembers that he stashed something back at mom and dad’s house and worry that mom or dad would stumble on it and start asking questions.

Wonder what else might be up there.

Ma’am Step Away from the Cat

with one comment

A reporter from the FOX affiliate in Cleveland had a run in with a cat this week. It’s bound to happen once the director takes the shot, but this poor girl started to cry.

Reporters: put the animal down at the first sign of trouble.

Why Every TV Editor is in trouble

without comments

This video was produced by a Queen parody band. A group of high school students who retell the story of David and Goliath through a song called “Bethlehemian Rhapsody.”

Bug

We’ve been knocking on a lot of wood these past few months. The flu has been going around but we haven’t gotten it. School’s been cancelled because 100 or so kids were home sick. We haven’t gotten it.

Stomach viruses. Sinus infections. The peanut butter sickness. We haven’t gotten any of it. Until maybe now.

Trey ran a fever for most of the day. A Saturday visit to the pediatrician found a sinus infection and a stomach virus. Still, he isn’t quite as sick as other kids have been in the neighborhood. His fever just hovered around 100 and there’s been no real stomach problems. I had a migraine all day today too but it wasn’t as bad as others have been.

Trey’s getting antibiotics and we’ll stay home again tomorrow hoping to pull the plug on the sinus infection and headaches.

I’ve come to believe that at least part of the reason we’ve stayed healthy is that we keep the house cool. Cameron says we keep it cold. The thermostat stays set on 67 in the winter and the new thermostats I installed turn the temp down to 61 after we go to bed. Maybe the germs don’t live in our house with the cold temperatures. Who know?

So far, we’ve been lucky. Hopefully, as the temperatures change we’ll fight off whatever comes around.

Quesadillas with the Stars

with 2 comments

It is kinda cool to be living in Nashville. Tonight we all went out for dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant, a place we generally go about once a month. Just before we sat down I saw a familiar face but couldn’t immediately figure where I knew her from. I didn’t intend to stare, but I’m sure Cameron noticed I kept glancing at this girl at another table.

Then it hit me: “That’s Lorrie Morgan”. Not a split second later there was Sammy Kershaw. A few minutes later Sammy got up from the table, saw that I had recognized him, smiled and said “hey”.

I couldn’t figure if anyone else in the restaurant (it’s always pretty busy) didn’t recognize them or were just being “Nashville polite”. I suppose it was the latter since most country music folks would know either one of these two. I interviewed Sammy when he was at the top of the charts, real nice guy, at least he was to me.

I said “hey, how you doing?” like I knew him but didn’t say anything else.

So I can add Kershaw and Morgan to the list of celebs I’ve run into. A few weeks ago the kids and I were shopping at Wal-Mart and saw Keech Rainwater, the drummer for LoneStar (he’s been on Wheel of Fortune in the past couple of weeks for you non-country music fans). And we’ve run into Ricky Skaggs and a couple of the Oak Ridge Boys at church.

Cameron asked me though if these singers mind it too much if someone does come up and say hi or if doing that kind of thing is frowned upon in Nashville. I’ve been told that Nashvillians don’t do it to make the celebrities feel they can go anywhere they want to go without getting “fanned”. I suppose that’s the norm.

Heaven help me if we ever see Carrie Underwood eating a chalupa.
